JAMB 1981
The ice and steam points of mercury-in-glass thermometer of centigrade scale and of uniform bore correspond respectively to 3cm and 19cm lengths of the mercury thread when the length is 12cm, the temperature is
A. 32°C
B. 48°C
C. 56°C
D. 65°C
E. 75°C
Correct Answer: Option C
Explanation
From the question, we can derive that steam point(100°) = 19cm, ice point(0°) = 3cm. Now the question is 12cm represents what temperature. I’ll call that temperature C, for crane.Therefore:
100°—19cm
C°—12cm
0°—3cm
C-0°/100-C = 12-3/19-12
C/100-C = 9/7
Cross multiply
7C = 9(100-C)
16C = 900
C = 56.25
C = 56°C
